They’re all talking about the “The Bowie Lives” Canada’s Most Spectacular Tribute to David Bowie! Michael Bell is an award-winning vocalist who channels the sound and styles of David Bowie, and with the help of an all-star band, multi-media, theatre and costumes, he has captured the imagination of fans young and old.

Michael discovered Bowie as a teen and performed songs with a number of his early bands. By the 80’s his first theatrical production “ChangesAllBowie” toured the “A circuit” before hanging up his “Ziggy” in the early ’90s. Decades passed. After David’s untimely death on January 10, 2016, Michael’s calling returned; his calling to honor the man who helped shape his life. Together with musical director Michael Beauclerc, they began auditioning players to fill out a band capable of performing some of Rock’s most challenging material. The Bowie Lives bring all the hits to the stage, from Space Oddity to Lazarus, and everything in between.

Overview:
The integration of women into Canada’s military forces was slow and marked by significant challenges during the Cold War, with the effects still visible today. In 2023, women made up only 16.5% of Canada’s military. This panel discussion will feature servicewomen who entered the Canadian Forces during and following the Cold War during this tumultuous time within Canada’s military structure. Their insights and stories will explore the struggles and triumphs of women in Canada’s military, and what the future will hold with the hopes of increasing representation of women in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Join us for an incredible evening of music! Freddy Vette, one of central Ontario’s favourite rock ‘n roll singers, will be playing with The Commodores, Canada’s original big swing band. And in Freddy’s backyard, too!

The Quinte King of Rock and Roll, Freddy has been gracing the stages of Ontario and beyond for years with his own band, Freddy Vette and The Flames. He’s also been rocking’ the airwaves at 800 CJBQ radio. Now, he’ll be bringing down the house with Canada’s oldest continuously-operating big swing band!

Nearing their 100th year (coming up in 2027!), the Commodores are at the height of their power. The seventeen musicians, some of the finest between Toronto and Ottawa, include Grammy and JUNO winners/nominees. They’re not just the big swing band of the World War Two era anymore. The music is arranged entirely by Brian Barlow, percussionist in the Grammy-winning Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass in the 80s. Brian also drums with the Commodores in this show. The two genres might seem an odd fit, but rock’n roll did grow out of the big band era. And in the hands of one of Canada’s greatest big band arrangers, the music goes together as if it should never have been separated.

Pre-pandemic, the band played to very good audiences at Belleville’s Empire Theatre, the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope, and the Brockville Arts Centre. In 2017, the Commodores played at the dance pavilion in Tweed’s Victoria Park for the Kiwanis Club’s anniversary. They are so excited to be returning to Hastings County!

No stranger to Canadian and international audiences, Russell deCarle is recognized as the lead singer and a founding member of award-winning multi-platinum country-roots group Prairie Oyster. For over a decade, he has concentrated on his solo career, and has released four recordings, the most recent being The End of the Road.

deCarle’s music isn’t easily categorized. Apparent are a lifetime of influences absorbing a wide range of musical genres from a time when Buck Owens, Frank Sinatra, and The Beatles could be heard back-to-back on commercial radio.

For some artists, the urge to make solo records asserts itself almost as soon as they start to gain attention as part of a successful band. Not so for deCarle: “For decades people were asking for a solo record,” he says, “but I never thought I was ready and the band always satisfied the musical part of my life.”

Russell’s sound may surprise those who remember Prairie Oyster, but truth is that the band was always more than a “country” band, and deCarle’s warm, burnished and intimate voice has always honoured an eclectic range of songs. True to form, the songs off his most recent albums The End of the Road and Alone in this Crowd offer a fluent collection of songs that mix southern soul and restrained balladry, with obvious touches of jazz, blues, old-school country, and western swing. deCarle’s songwriting has absorbed all those influences, and he avidly listens to both soul singers and the men and women who made early country music so compelling.

As Russell puts it, “I want people to be emotionally invested in these songs, whether I wrote them or whether they were created by others. If they touched audiences in some way — well, that would be the best thing that could happen.”

Russell will be joined by stellar sidemen, Steve Briggs on guitar and Russ Boswell on bass. You’re not going to want to miss this music legend or his opener, The Salt Cellars. Join us for what will be an evening of spectacular musicianship and great fun!

The Salt Cellars, Virginia deCarle and Rob Bersan are a singer/songwriter duo hailing from the south side of Algonquin Park. They are a product of their many influences and blend the sounds of Folk, Americana, Blues, Jazz and Pop to create a sound that is uniquely their own. In 2016 they formed the duo, ‘The Salt Cellars’.

Their audiences love their tight harmonies, writing styles, skilled musicianship and energy. In 2017 the duo became a trio with multi instrumentalist Ron Kapitain, and in 2018 they recording their first album titled “Truth” at Anaxjunius Music Studios with recording engineer/musician Richard Joudrey in Maynooth, ON featuring Tom Fitzgerald on violin (“The Gate”). In 2018 The Salt Cellars became a six piece inviting Richard Joudrey (bass), Anne Wilde (backing vocals), Ron Kapitain (piano, harmonica, melodeon) and Brendon Burgess (drums) to join the band.

As a six piece they released a second album at Anaxjunius Music Studios titled “Crooked Tree”. In August 2022 they released their 3rd album titled, “Inside These Walls”. “Inside These Walls” features guest Canadian musicians Jane Bunnett, a multi JUNO award winning member of Maqueque, and Hugh Marsh, a jazz violinist who has played with, among others, Bruce Cockburn, Loreena Mckennitt, Kevin Hearn and The Rheostatics.

The Salt Cellars made several independently funded Music videos produced by Videographer Peter Chatterton (“You Don’t Know Me”, “Our Favourite Lake”, “Wanna Be With You” and “Silence”) and Harold Eastman (“Inside these Walls”). Now a duo, they have had the opportunity to be showcase artists at the 2023 Folk Music Ontario Conference. They have a great lineup of shows booked for 2024!

The Tweed & Area Arts Council are welcoming singer-songwriter Craig Cardiff to Tweed on Sunday Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. Craig was originally scheduled to open our season in April 2020…and guess what, that did not happen! We are very happy he will be coming our way this fall. Craig is based in Eastern Ontario but is known all across Canada, and has developed a following throughout North America and Europe. Guitar in hand, Craig can turn any setting into an intimate affair, infusing his music and lyrics with an uncompromising humanism rarely seen in today’s production-heavy climate.

A modern troubadour, Craig Cardiff builds landscapes of sound using live digital loops, bringing the room to a hush. Each show is very personal, with lots of audience interaction, and he is an extremely talented musician! Edgy, folky, beautiful, and melancholy, one song breaks your heart, and the next one puts it back together. Craig makes it a point to keep the relationship with his fans personal, inviting and accepting any opportunity to make his audience as much a part of the performance as he is.

Suzie has won 12 Maple Blues Awards, 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards and is a 3X Juno Nominee. She has also twice won the International Songwriting Competition – Blues Category. Dan Mangan is a two-time JUNO award winning & three-time Polaris Music Prize listed musician and songwriter. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia with his wife and two sons. He has toured extensively in North America, Europe & Australia. Dan also scored the feature film Hector And The Search For Happiness starring Simon Pegg as well as television shows for Netflix (Hilda) and AMC (Unspeakable). In 2017, he co-founded Side Door, a community marketplace platform for the arts that seeks to democratize and decentralize the entertainment industry by allowing non-traditional spaces to be venues.

Mangan’s 6th studio album, ‘Being Somewhere’, was produced by Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) over nearly three years of long-distance collaboration. The album unfurls like an overdue tender conversation with a dear friend. Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for almost 40 years. A man with a thousand friends, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life.

Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song, his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, a relaxed and amiable story-teller, facing a rambunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock Festival circa 1968, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit.

Valdy’s recent CDs include “Contenders”, a collaboration with friend and fellow singer/songwriter, Gary Fjellgaard, with whom he has an absolute blast touring, and a solo release, “Viva Valdy: Live at Last”, a two-CD package, one live, one studio, with a total of 25 tunes, and a lyric booklet.

One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition A Good Song was recorded under the title Just a Man by the venerable Quincy Jones ( he sang lead on the recording!). Play Me a Rock and Roll Song has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf.

Along the way, Valdy has taken his music to a dozen different countries, from Denmark to Australia and been an often-invited performer at the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas. His past television appearances include Canada AM and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Enjoy an all-ages, family-friendly show from Canada’s Celtic Rock Warriors. Mudmen are no strangers to the Bancroft area, having played numerous SOLD OUT shows over the years. Come and congratulate Mudmen on their recent win of the 2024 Canadian Business Awards for “Best Celtic Rock Band!”

Career highlights include meeting & performing for the Queen of England on Parliament Hill, performing at the 84 Edmonton Oiler’s televised Stanley Cup reunion with Sarah MacLaughlin & Red Ryder, the Oilers/Flames home opening ceremonies on the CBC, 12 Canada’s Walk of Fame ceremonies, the Mackenzie Brothers TWO-FOUR special on the CBC, 7 Grey Cups, 3 Memorial Cups, and 3 Briers. Mudmen have been the opening act for ZZ Top, the Guess Who, George Canyon, Nazereth, 54-40, Natalie MacMaster and April Wine. They’ve guested with Johnny Reid, The Chieftains, The Irish Rovers, and John McDermott. The Great Canadian Comedy Caravan is a theatre tour featuring some of Canada’s top television writers, actors and Just For Laughs Veterans.

Headliner Mike Paterson

In a career spanning close to 30 years, Mike can truly say he’s done it all. With 17 Just For Laughs appearances, multiple cross Canada tours, his own Comedy NOW! special on CTV, and CBC’s Debaters, Mike has been featured on every main network in Canada.

Mike has also starred on television shows across the United States, including a recurring role on the Fox series The Moody’s opposite Dennis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, Teletoon’s Toon Marty, the Disney channel MOW Bad Hair Day, The Game directed by Jacob Tierney, and Syfy’s Being Human.

Mike’s feature films include I’m Not There starring Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale, George Clooney’s directorial debut Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Last Call opposite Rhys Ifans and John Malkovich.

Mike also played Big Beard in the Emmy nominated Disney feature Prey, based on the Predator franchise. Also, an accomplished theatre actor, Mike has had lead roles in the Segal Centre productions of The Odd Couple, Harvey, Guys and Dolls and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Each workshop focuses on a specific theme and begins with an in-gallery yoga session that combines gentle stretching, strengthening exercises, and yogic inspiration led by Registered Yoga Teacher Rina Morra. Following a short snack break, participants will enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage (water or tea), meditation, an intention-setting circle, and journaling in the McMichael’s historic Founders’ Lounge.

RELAXED PERFORMANCE: Saturday, December 21st @ 2 PM will be a relaxed performance of A Christmas Carol for anyone who may enjoy a calmer theatre environment. Relaxed performances were initially designed to make theatre spaces more comfortable and welcoming to audience members with autism spectrum disorders, sensory and communication disorders or learning disabilities. Other audience members who may benefit from Relaxed Performances include parents with toddlers, people with Tourette’s syndrome, people who experience anxiety, or even people who just don’t enjoy the conventions that are experienced in a traditional theatre setting. Some relaxed performances include adjustments to the technical elements of the show (for example, reducing the volume on loud sound cues or removing strobing lighting effects or full blackouts), leaving lights on in the audience throughout the show, allowing audience members to leave the theatre and return at any point, and assuring patrons that noise and movement during the show is acceptable.
