Ontario Place is an agency of the Government of Ontario that features 155 acres of breathtaking waterfront property in Toronto. The iconic location is a venue for activities, live music, festivals, events and more. Re-opened as a beautiful public space, the previously closed Ontario Place left behind its theme park days and blossomed into a park that honours the landscape and brings people of all ages and communities together.

Cinesphere

Initially opening in 1971, Cinesphere was created as the world’s first permanent IMAX theatre.

IMAX is a proprietary large-format projection system developed in Ontario, and Cinesphere features a unique and immersive IMAX® theatre experience that allows for screening of films with IMAX’s laser digital and 70mm film technologies. Graeme Ferguson’s North of Superior was the first film commissioned for and screened at Cinesphere at its 1971 grand opening, and it helped put the IMAX format on the map.

In 2014, after being out of operation for several years, the Province of Ontario designated Cinesphere a structure of Cultural Heritage Value. Provincial government funding supporting the revitalization of Ontario Place made Cinesphere accessible once again, with Ontario Place reopening the iconic Cinesphere for both public and private events on November 3, 2018.

Now restored to its original glory – with some modern enhancements – Cinesphere remains the largest IMAX theatre in the province. The theatre is now open year-round and offers a variety of films for all ages. Current capacity holds 615 seats and 527 for 3D viewing.

Ontario Place welcomes everyone to experience films on the big screen, and more, at our waterfront destination IMAX theatre.
