Canada Science and Technology Museum

DESCRIPTION

The largest of its kind in Canada, the Canada Science and Technology Museum fulfills its mission through its collection, its permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions, as well as special events, school programs, and workshops. The Canada Science and Technology Museum also fulfills its mandate through publications, loans, conferences and lectures, expert advice, and joint action with other museums and organizations with similar goals and interests.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum lets visitors experience science and technology first-hand, as they discover artifact-rich exhibitions featuring marine and land transportation, communications, Space, computer technology as well as many unique objects from its national collection. Science and technology has changed Canada and the lives of Canadians. This transformation of Canada, from the period of early exploration and settlement to the present, has been marked by many achievements in science and technology.

Transformation of Canada

The study and presentation of the "Transformation of Canada," through science, technology, and innovation, can be broken into sub-themes:

  • Canadian Context
Context shapes the evolution of science and technology. Canadian achievements reflect the challenges overcome and the choices made in developing the nation in light of vast geographical distances, a harsh physical environment, and limited resources in terms of skilled workers and available capital.
  • Finding New Ways
The search for new knowledge and new ways of doing things is basic to human nature. Science, technology and innovation have played key roles in efforts to find new ways of living, learning, and working.
  • How "Things" Work
Developing an understanding of how "things" work can make people more aware of the role of science and technology in people’s lives. At the most basic level, taking apart an object, process, or system — both physically and conceptually — provides important insight into the world we live in.
  • People, Science and Technology
People have a dynamic relationship with science and technology. Domestic and work lives are shaped and influenced by scientific and technological change. At the same time, people shape the evolution of science and technology individually and collectively through their decisions and actions. However, our ability to direct and control scientific and technological advancements is not absolute: choices and trade-offs often have to be made with the consequences in mind.

We are a sister museum to the following museums:

Canada Aviation and Space Museum

The Canada Aviation and Space Museum focuses on aviation in Canada, but within an international context, from its beginnings in 1909 to the present day.

Canada Agriculture and Food Museum

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is living proof of the “Green Capital”. In fact, Ottawa is the only world capital that has a working farm at its heart. Canada’s unique agricultural heritage is featured at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, where you can explore the sights and sounds of typical farm life.
