Exhibitions on View:

Michael Benson: Planetfall
Since the early 1960s, a succession of spacecraft, launched and controlled remotely, have voyaged through the solar system, photographing and feeding back to Earth a steady stream of extraterrestrial imagery. Using this raw picture data, sourced from space agency archives, American artist Michael Benson processes, reworks, and composites individual frames to produce highly detailed images of the planets and their orbiting moons. His photographs show these celestial bodies from unusual vantage points and render light and color with startling clarity. Benson’s appropriation and reinvention of images taken by robotic spacecraft offers an astonishing alternative to society’s visual clichés of outer space, restoring a sense of wonder to scenes beyond the reach of mankind.

Yann Pocreau: Towards the Light
Montreal-based artist Yann Pocreau’s first solo exhibition in Toronto, Towards the Light, delves into the transformative qualities of light in photography, examining the very essence of the medium. Known for his abstract, minimal compositions, Pocreau uses diverse light sources—moonlight, sunlight, artificial and coloured lighting—and employs camera-less techniques, such as photograms, to explore light’s impact on photosensitive surfaces. Moving beyond representation, Pocreau’s poetic experiments reveal how light itself becomes the subject, tracing ephemeral imprints in subtly shifting visual effects. This exhibition invites viewers to witness the elemental nature of photography through Pocreau’s distinctive vision.

Kelly Richardson: Origin Stories
Kelly Richardson’s Origin Stories is a metaphysical exploration that transcends traditional photography, transforming extinct species into crystalline, diamond-like forms. Set in the vastness of cosmic space, Richardson’s digital debris field emits an eerie symphony, symbolizing Earth’s unique place in the universe and humanity’s isolation. The work provokes a powerful question: given humanity’s monumental efforts to find life beyond Earth, how differently would we value species threatened by extinction today if they were discovered on another planet? Richardson challenges us to reflect on our connection to life, the impact of climate change, and the extinction crisis we are both witnessing and contributing to. In collaboration with the Awi’nakola Foundation, the artist emphasizes the urgency of reconsidering our relationship with the planet and prioritizing its preservation.
