Tom Thomson (1877–1917) is indisputably Canada’s preeminent modern painter, and his catalytic achievement changed the face of Canadian painting forever. This exhibition will offer a close look at Thomson’s legacy, focusing on the small en plein air oil paintings, also know as oil sketches, of which he is the supreme master. An account fit for the twenty-first century, the exhibition and accompanying major publication will isolate particular moments of Thomson’s artistic experimentation, and incorporate assessments of his work by leading contemporary artists and writers, exploring Thomson’s evolving public persona as the quintessential outdoorsman, and considering his oeuvre within the framework of the international art of his time.

Banovan is a photo-based project produced in 2020 that examines the role of photography in how we understand and make personal, familial, and collective memories. Originating in the artist’s desire to connect with an inaccessible family history in Iran, the project employs found family snapshots and combines them with images from a popular Iranian women’s magazine published in the 1950s. Layering and juxtaposing the female subjects pictured in the family photographs and on the magazine’s pages, the interventions create a collision of meanings where personal and sociopolitical narratives intersect. The project also addresses the complicated relationships between familial, cultural, and historical contexts that have influenced women’s lives in Iran.

Between 1991 and 2003, Canadian documentary photographer Louie Palu established himself in the mining communities of Northeastern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec. Over time he accumulated an extensive, in-depth body of work that revealed the living and working conditions of the miners, while also capturing the formidable industrial architecture of the pits. Cage Call gathers together more than fifty black-and-white photographs and ephemera from Palu’s visual archive of this central but often overlooked and misunderstood aspect of Canada’s industrial culture.

Event Details
Artist Su Rynard’s correspondence with her uncle, Vernon Rowley, inspired As Soon As Weather Will Permit—the haunting and disquieting story of one soldier’s participation in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. This two-channel video combines their verbal and written exchanges with family archives, historical footage evoking nuclear warfare, and stark landscapes of the Utah airfield and bombing range where Air Force radar operator Rowley trained for the atomic mission by the US government. Threading these disparate audiovisual elements together, Rynard reconciles one person’s conflicted recollection with the collective memory of a dramatic and violent historic event.
The artist gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Featuring more than thirty-five stories about historic events and personalities, this exhibition explores the important role of photo agencies during the heyday of print photojournalism. Drawing from The Image Centre’s famous Black Star press photography collection as well as the archive of Canada’s national news agency, The Canadian Press, the selection spans the twentieth century—from the British movement for women’s right to vote, through the Watts riots in Los Angeles, to the Oka Crisis in Quebec. Each story illuminates a different aspect of how photojournalists have worked to document the news and distribute their photographs for publication.
Generously supported by media sponsors The Toronto Star and blogTO.

A feast for the senses, this evocative program opens with an imaginative musical journey through touch, smell, taste, sound and sight by Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez Bellido. Maurice Ravel’s lush and sensual Rapsodie espagnole captures the intoxicating flavours, sounds, and colours of Spain, while his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, filled with dazzling cadenzas and left-hand acrobatics, beguiles listeners into an illusion of two hands touching the keys, performed by the incomparable Seong-Jin Cho. The program concludes with the sumptuous Poem of Ecstasy by Alexander Scriabin, a musical depiction of experiences that transcend the physical senses and exist on a mystical plane.

In her exhibition The Music Sang ‘Lean on Me’ Hannah Somers investigates her own identity by returning to her roots, creating visual conversations between her mother and aunt, biracial twin sisters adopted into a white family in the 1960s. The photographs and video featured in the exhibition recount the circumstances of the sisters’ upbringing and its effect on their racial and social identities. The imagery probes their role models, and depicts their relationship with one another through discussion and gesture. Raised within a predominantly white community, the sisters’ were aware of everyone’s eyes upon them and the stereotypes that clung to their Black individuality. Through lighthearted conversation they recount growing up with no familial connection to their heritage or the Black community. In response, they idolized and felt connected with figures in popular culture and the media.

Event Details
Cobalt, Ontario—some 500 kilometres north of Toronto—was established in 1904 following the discovery of rich silver, cobalt, ore, and nickel deposits. At peak production in 1911, Colbalt provided approximately one eighth of the world’s silver. In its heyday, the story of Cobalt was known around the world, and the town attracted miners, scientists, scholars, and of course, artists. This exhibition showcases the work of the artists who visited and documented Cobalt and its silver mines between the First and Second World Wars, after much of the natural resource deposits were depleted. Among them was a rising generation of Canadian modern painters which included Yvonne McKague Housser, Bess Larkin Housser Harris, Isabel McLaughlin, Frederick Banting, A.Y. Jackson, and Franklin Carmichael. These artists created works that depicted Canada as a new, modern industrial nation in step with the future—a contrast to the better-known works from this period that picture Canada as untouched wilderness. While some artists conjured Cobalt as a heroic bastion of industry and enterprise, others focused on the town’s grit and dishevelment. This exhibition and its accompanying publication will explore both sides of this dynamic relationship and shine new light on the settler relationship with the natural landscape.
This exhibition is guest curated by Dr. Catherine Mastin.

Event Details
This new studio program is designed for beginner and intermediate artists who wish to paint with greater freedom and become more expressive.
Under the guidance of professional artist and instructor Dominik Modlinski, this two-day workshop is intended to hone students’ drawing and painting skills and to expand their creative language. Emphasis will be on risk-taking, abstract design, and mark-making – all three necessary components to take one’s work to the next level and create a unique creative signature.
Students will begin this artistic adventure while examining the dynamic power of composition and color . Working from a photo reference, participants will create drawing thumbnail sketches focusing on key areas including light and dark values, edges and lines as a warm-up to composing a dynamic composition. One of these “thumbnails” will be used as the basis for concept development, which will ultimately become a final drawing, and finally, a larger canvas or panel.
Modlinski will introduce students to a foundational structure of using shape, value, color, edges and center of interest. The aim of this workshop is to inspire students to compose artwork based on strong colour contrast principals which are carried diligently throughout creative process resulting in bold and colorful works of art. Students are free to apply the techniques learned in this studio to their own, personal style of painting. This workshop is intended for both oil and acrylic mediums.
