Marmoraton Mine

Discover an abandoned open pit iron mine that supplied iron ore pellets to Bethlehem Steel Mills in New York, from 1955 to 1979. Discover the history of this site, which once employed some 300 men who worked to fill 30 to 35 railway cars with iron ore each day. Wonder at the natural beauty that has taken over this once industrial land, with underground streams and rainfall filling the pit with water since its closing in 1979, and the unusual geology of the region adding a unique hue. Imagine what once was -an open pit mine that, when blasted out, measured approximately 1700 feet by 1200 feet, reaching 600 feet deep -as you gaze upon this present-day lake.
